Waldorf

The Waldorf pedagogy, initiated by the Austrian philosopher and pedagogue Rudolf Steiner, seeks the development of each child in a free environment.

Waldorf pedagogues believe that preparation for formal learning depends on greater independence of character, temperament, habits, motor skills and development of intellectual abilities, such as memory and abstraction. Formal instruction in reading, writing and other academic disciplines is not introduced until students enter primary school, when students are around seven years of age. Steiner believed that involving young children in abstract intellectual activities too early could negatively affect their growth and development.
